The Music Lesson by Johannes Vermeer

This is The Music Lesson, also known as Woman Seated at a Virginal or A Lady at the Virginals with a Gentleman is a classic oil on canvas Baroque art print from an original painting by Dutch Golden Age artist Johannes Vermeer painted around 1662-1665.

The Music Lesson depicts a young pupil receiving a music lesson. The man’s mouth is slightly open giving the impression that he is singing along, this is suggestive of a relationship between the two figures. This was a common theme in Netherlandish art during this period. Vermeer consistently used the same objects in his paintings, such as the draped rug, the white water jug, various instruments, tiled floors and windows that convey light and shadows. This is one of a few paintings by Vermeer which were kept in his home until his death in 1675 when his family was forced to sell them.
