Going West – Jackson Pollock

Going West, painted by Jackson Pollock in 1934, reflects the strong influence of Thomas Hart Benton. Pollock had been a student of Benton’s at the New York Art Students League. The painting is a homage to Benton’s Regionalism, taking the form of a heroic, frontier subject, presented with broad and gestural brushstrokes. However, even as Benton was resisting modern European art and abstraction, Pollock was incorporating them into his work as a way to express the evolving life experiences of modern America.

Jackson Pollock was an influential American painter and a groundbreaking figure in abstract expressionism. He is renowned for his signature “drip technique“ of pouring or splashing liquid household paint onto a canvas from all angles, creating a vibrant and energetic style of painting dubbed “all–over painting“ and “action painting“. Pollock‘s extreme forms of abstraction mesmerized some critics, who praised the immediacy of his work, but others were less impressed by the seemingly random effects.
