Artwork Description

This is a quality canvas print of Norwegian artist, Edvard Munch’s painting Death in the Sickroom painted by the artist in 1895 using oil paints on canvas. This is a thought-provoking and emotive painting that depicts the artist’s own family grieving together after the death of Munch’s sister Sophie. The painting encapsulates grief, despair and anguish and shows that the family are both unified and isolated in their grief.

Edvard Munch was best known for his now iconic artwork, The Scream, he grew up in Norway where his childhood was disrupted by bereavement, illness and the constant fear of a genetic mental illness. Munch later lived a more bohemian existence, heavily influenced by Hans Jæger a Norwegian writer, philosopher and anarchist political activist who encouraged Munch to 'soul paint' reflecting on his own psychological state resulting in Edvard Munch's unique and distinctive style.
