Artwork Description

This is a quality canvas print of Norwegian artist, Edvard Munch’s painting Vampire painted by the artist in 1893 using oil paints on canvas. It was not Munch that named this artwork Vampire, he actually titled it Love and Pain, over time this name gradually emerged as viewers believed the painting depicted a man locked in a vampire’s embrace, Munch whilst remaining someone what ambiguous about the deeper meaning of the art, always maintained that it simply depicted a man being comforted by a woman.

Edvard Munch was best known for his now iconic artwork, The Scream, he grew up in Norway where his childhood was disrupted by bereavement, illness and the constant fear of a genetic mental illness. Munch later lived a more bohemian existence, heavily influenced by Hans Jæger a Norwegian writer, philosopher and anarchist political activist who encouraged Munch to 'soul paint' reflecting on his own psychological state resulting in Edvard Munch's unique and distinctive style.
