Created in 1978 as part of Andy Warhol’s celebrated Athletes series, Muhammad Ali in Blue captures one of the most iconic figures of the twentieth century through Warhol’s unmistakable pop art lens. Commissioned by art collector Richard Weisman, the series paid tribute to sporting legends as the new breed of celebrities, figures whose fame transcended their athletic achievements.

In this striking portrait, Warhol presents Muhammad Ali in bold blue tones, offset by a stylised tan complexion and a contemplative downward gaze. Far removed from the confident bravado that defined Ali in the ring, this image reveals a quieter, more introspective side of the boxing legend. The artwork was based on a series of Polaroids taken by Warhol in 1977 at Ali’s training camp in Pennsylvania, with this image chosen from 56 photographs to be transformed into one of four distinctive screenprints.
