KAWS In the Woods

“In the Woods” is a significant triptych created in 2002 by the renowned Brooklyn-based artist KAWS, whose real name is Brian Donnelly. Measuring approximately 147.6 by 275.3 centimetres, this acrylic on canvas over panel work showcases KAWS’s distinctive approach to reimagining popular culture icons. In this piece, he appropriates a scene from Disney’s 1937 classic, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” transforming the familiar imagery into a darker, more critical commentary.

The artwork presents Snow White surrounded by woodland creatures, a scene originally symbolising innocence and purity. However, KAWS subverts this narrative by rendering the characters in a monochromatic black palette with crisp white outlines against a sky-blue background. Snow White’s eyes are marked with the artist’s signature Xs, and her hair is modified to include the iconic cross-bone design. These alterations infuse the piece with a sinister undertone, challenging the viewer’s nostalgic associations and prompting a re-examination of the original narrative.

KAWS’s reinterpretation of “Snow White” in “In the Woods” exemplifies his broader practice of appropriating and deconstructing classic cartoon and comic book characters. By doing so, he explores the visual language of popular culture and its pervasive influence on society. This piece stands alongside his other works that reimagine figures like Mickey Mouse, SpongeBob SquarePants, and the Simpsons, all transformed through his unique artistic lens to comment on themes of commercialism, identity, and media saturation.

In May 2019, “In the Woods” was sold at Christie’s in New York for $3,855,000, significantly surpassing its high estimate and underscoring the strong demand for KAWS’s work in the contemporary art market. This sale reflects the artist’s rising prominence and the increasing recognition of his ability to blend street art aesthetics with fine art practices, challenging traditional boundaries and redefining the landscape of modern art.
