The Justice League movie, released in 2017, was a highly anticipated superhero ensemble film that brought together some of DC Comics’ most iconic characters. Directed by Zack Snyder, with Joss Whedon stepping in for post-production reshoots and editing, the film aimed to expand the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) by uniting Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg in a battle against a formidable extraterrestrial threat. Following the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), the story revolves around Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince as they seek to assemble a team of metahumans to combat Steppenwolf, a powerful general of the villainous Darkseid. The film marked the first live-action cinematic portrayal of the Justice League and sought to rival the success of Marvel’s Avengers franchise.

Despite high expectations, the film faced a troubled production, with significant changes made after Zack Snyder departed due to personal reasons. Joss Whedon, brought in to oversee reshoots and script rewrites, infused the film with a lighter tone and additional humour, contrasting with Snyder’s darker, more brooding vision. This shift resulted in a noticeable tonal inconsistency, and fans quickly recognised the differences in style between the two directors. Upon release, Justice League received mixed reviews, with praise for its action sequences and character dynamics but criticism for its rushed pacing, CGI effects, and lack of narrative depth. Additionally, the film’s villain, Steppenwolf, was widely regarded as underdeveloped, lacking the complexity and menace expected from a major antagonist.

The theatrical cut of Justice League underperformed at the box office, earning approximately $657 million worldwide, falling short of expectations given the success of previous DC films. Many fans and critics felt that the final product failed to fully realise the potential of the Justice League’s big-screen debut. However, a dedicated fan campaign calling for the release of Zack Snyder’s original vision gained significant traction online, eventually leading to the launch of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max in 2021. This four-hour director’s cut reinstated Snyder’s intended story, character arcs, and darker tone, garnering significantly more positive reception from both critics and audiences.

From a visual standpoint, Justice League embraced a blend of CGI-heavy action sequences, stylised cinematography, and striking superhero imagery, which translated well into promotional material, including posters and merchandise. The film’s posters often featured a dramatic, high-contrast aesthetic, highlighting each hero in bold, dynamic poses with a sense of unity and impending conflict. Some promotional artwork leaned into the comic book roots of the characters, incorporating vibrant colours and powerful taglines, while others adopted a grittier, more cinematic look. The Justice League movie poster remains a sought-after collectable, representing not just the film itself but also the broader cultural conversation surrounding its production and eventual redemption through the Snyder Cut.
